  • My car doesn't seem to start properly when I turn the key in the ignition. Is there something wrong with the engine?

Submitted by: Stephen Currie on 08/05/2007
  • This is normally an indication that the car battery in the engine is 'drained' or 'flat.' The battery should be replaced or recharged by a qualified mechanic. Never attempt to remove the battery yourself as it may be leaking sulfuric acid, which is highly poisonous. Another cause of a 'flat' car battery is a faulty carborator, which is device which charges the battery whenever the engine is switched on. If the carborator is damaged or faulty, the battery's power will eventually 'drain out' through time.

  • My steering wheel seems to vibrate when I'm driving at an average speed. What's causing this?

Submitted by: Lee Munroe on 08/05/2007
  • If your car's is vibrating whilst driving at an average speed, the car wheels may need balanced. This process involves placing the car wheel on a balancing machine and spinning to wheel to identify areas of irregular balance on either side of the wheel. Small weights are placed on either side of the rim or alloy to correct any vibrations. Any tyre garage or mechanic will be able to balance the car wheels to correct any vibration in the steering wheel. Another cause is a 'twist' one of the tyres, where one side of the tyre thread bulges and causes vibration whilst driven on. Ask a tyre fitter or qualified mechanic to inspect the tyres if you are experiencing this problem.

  • My car seems to pull to the passenger side when I'm driving on a straight road. What is the cause of this?

Submitted by: John McCormick on 08/05/2007
  • There are numerous causes which cause a car to 'pull' to either side. One possible cause is soft tyre pressure, as this forces the car to 'pull' to one side. Secondly, the car's steering alignment may need adjusted as this also contributes to such a problem. If the car's wheel alignment is out of line, it is always best to get adjusted by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible, as it can eventually wear the car tyres irregularly.
